BMI View : Efforts by the Iranian government to strengthen international ties bode well for domestic drugmakers looking to expand their pharmaceutical export potential. While we expect progress to be made in advancing local firm s ' production capabilities, risks in the form of limited funding and vulnerability to external shocks present key risks to their competitiveness on international markets over the coming years.

Despite an improved operational environment and the removal of most sanctions, foreign investment inflows into Iran's pharmaceutical sector will remain below potential over the coming years, perpetuating a highly challenging market for multinational drugmakers. More recently, however, the outlook for Iran's domestic pharmaceutical industry has become more positive, with evidence of enhanced manufacturing capabilities and greater self-sufficiency in the production of sophisticated medicines, thereby increasing its scope for international export opportunities.
