Changes to South Africa's pharmaceutical pricing environment are imminent, after the Department of Health published draft proposals for the international benchmarking of medicine prices. Broadly in line with what was first suggested in October 2006, factory prices of patented drug would eventually be set at the lowest price in a basket of countries - Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Spain. Historical and projected foreign exchange rates would be used to calculate prices.
