As a strategy, outsourcing forms a key part of US-based Eli Lilly's drive to streamline its R&D processes. Over the past few years, the company, like many multinational drugmakers, has been looking to outsource research functions to Asia in order to lower overheads. Eli Lilly has forged partnerships with China's Shanghai ChemPartner and Hutchison MediPharma (Chi-Med) for early-stage drug development and with Indian firms Nicholas Piramal and Suven Pharmaceuticals for R&D
