Boosting Australia's reputation for high quality biomedical R&D, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved local firm CSL's avian influenza vaccine, Panvax. Launch will only be sanctioned by the government in the event of a pandemic, so no sales are expected until 2009 at the earliest, or perhaps none at all. Nevertheless, BMI believes the news will attract more drugmakers to partner with CSL, which was instrumental in the development of Merck & Co's breakthrough cervical cancer vaccine, Gardasil.
