Despite the registration of a new medicine, the burden of Parkinson's disease in the US will continue to grow through to 2030. UK firm GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)'s Requip XL (extended-release ropinirole) is the first once-daily dopamine agonist to be sanctioned by the US FDA, but it is BMI's view that its impact on the disabling condition will be minimal. This is in part due to the product's marginal advantage over regular Requip, but mainly due to more people being diagnosed with the disease, itself due to the ageing of the baby boomer generation.
