The prevalence and prevention of counterfeit pharmaceuticals is a highly publicised topic, both in Europe and globally. There have been widely varying figures of the estimated value and volume of this illegal trade, with Pfizer claiming that it is losing US$2bn a year in sales through counterfeits of its anti-impotence drug Viagra (sildenafil) alone.
