In a major boost for Brazil's R&D credentials, the Supreme Court has voted to uphold the 2005 law permitting research using embryonic stem (ES) cells. Brazil will remain the first and only country in Latin America to allow the practice, following the narrow 6-5 vote in favour of the legislation. Research will be permitted on stem cells from embryos that have been frozen for at least three years and that have been deemed unsuitable for human reproduction, with the consent of the
