The availability of prescription analgesics remains patchy in developing countries, resulting in unnecessary suffering during childbirth and among the terminally ill, according to the International Narcotics Board. The 2007 annual report found that global consumption of analgesics remained strongly weighted towards Europe and North America, which accounted for 96% of fentanyl consumption, 89% of morphine consumption and 97% of oxycodone consumption in 2007.
