UK-based drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has gained approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) for its breast-cancer drug Tykerb (lapatinib), touted by many as a potential blockbuster. The EMEA has granted the drug a provisional one-year approval. This means that the drug can go on sale immediately but that additional clinical data is required, with GSK pledging to provide results from a late-stage trial.
