Peru's Ministry of Health (Minsa) aims to provide health coverage to an additional 2mn residents by the end of 2007, according to Carlos Vallejos Sologuren, the country's health minister. If successful, the country's total insured population would approach 14mn, just short of half of the population - although the bulk will be represented under the current patchwork of insurance systems. It would represent a visible success for the administration of President Alan GarcĂa and its ambitious programme for bringing universal healthcare to the country for the first time under the still very new, unified Seguro Integral de Salud (SIS) health
