Unless something positive is done to resolve the healthcare sector strikes, Poland's Self-Defense party (Samoobrona) is threatening to leave the governing coalition. If Samoobrona drops its allegiance to the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS), the opposition Civic Platform party (PO) would be in ascendancy, and the country could plunge into political turmoil. BMI believes that this scenario is unlikely but we caution that if demands made by nurses and doctors - higher wages and hospital management reform - are ignored then the industrial action could swiftly escalate, severely impacting the delivery of healthcare in Poland.
