In an attempt to reverse the country's fiscal deficit, Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico has banned health insurance companies from making profits. It is hoped that this will prevent funds from leaving the US$2.2bn healthcare system, resulting in better care for patients. However, BMI believes that the development is a step backwards, as any benefit seen from competition will now disappear.
