Swiss drugmaker Roche has announced two technology transfer agreements with African firms, which will help the local manufacture of anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs. Zimbabwe's Varichem Pharmaceuticals and Addis Pharmaceutical Factory from Ethiopia will be given the technical expertise and guidance to produce Roche's second-line ARV saquinavir. The move is in line with the current trend among multinational drugmakers to provide HIV/AIDS drugs at low or cost prices in low-income countries, relying on demand in developed markets to protect the bottom line.
