President George Bush has announced that he is to double the amount of money the US spends combating HIV/AIDS around the globe to US$30bn. If Congress approves the plan it will bring the total amount committed over a ten-year period to US$48bn, the most one country has ever spent tackling a single disease. The focus of the spending will predominately be in Africa with Botswana, Cote d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Guyana, Haiti, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia being specifically targeted.
