French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis has announced disappointing sales for its breakthrough obesity drug Acomplia (rimonabant) for Q107. In the first three months of the year, the drug only generated EUR15mn (US$20.29mn) in Europe primarily due to its widespread failure to gain reimbursement status. BMI is surprised by the results as due to the high obesity levels in the region and Acomplia's first-in-class status we expected sales to accelerate rapidly. Company predictions that the drug would eventually reach EUR3bn (US$4.06bn) in sales could now turn out to be overstated.
