When US drugmaker Schering-Plough acquired Dutch biotech Organon for EUR11bn (US$14.5bn), most industry observers focused on how the deal would boost Schering's late-stage pipeline in key therapeutic areas such as schizophrenia. What most failed to mention, is that Organon is also the world's leading producer of vaccines for livestock and household pets. Animal health is big business in the US, and more and more multinational drugmakers are looking to invest in this area as a way of offsetting the risks inherent in their core human health operations.
