Local press, analysts and the companies themselves have increasingly commented on the possible integration of Japanese drugmakers Mitsubishi Pharma and Tanabe Seiyaku. Tanabe would acquire Mitsubishi and parent company Mitsubishi Chemical would then take a controlling stake in the combined company. BMI believes that the possibility of a merger is strong because of the obvious benefits. Pressure to consolidate in Japan's pharmaceutical market is intense as R&D costs continue to increase, competition from foreign firms grows and the government pushes for lower healthcare costs for its rapidly ageing population.
