French drug giant Sanofi-Aventis is understood to be in talks with US pharmaceutical firm Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) over a possible merger, according to unnamed sources reported in the French press. BMS has been frequently linked with Sanofi-Aventis, which is over twice its size, and is already ithe US sales partner on two of the French group's leading drugs - blood thinner Plavix (clopidogrel bisulfate) and blood pressure drug Avapro (irbesartan). A successful deal would create the world's largest drugmaker, outstripping US-based Pfizer , with estimated global sales of US$56bn.
