The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) has elevated Chile from its "Watch List" to the "Priority Watch List" for alleged failure to comply with US standards for intellectual property rights protection, particularly in the areas of pharmaceuticals and software. While this development has minimal material impact for drugmakers operating in Chile, BMI believes that it is a further example of the influence of pharmaceutical companies on US government policy.
