Chile's president, Michelle Bachelet, has pledged to increase budgetary funding for healthcare by 13% in the newly signed 2007 public sector budget law as the government looks to extend the AUGE plan aiming to bring more Chileans into the healthcare system. The US$28bn public sector budget aims to increase social spending as part of Bachelet's pledge to increase 'inclusiveness' in social protections. The added healthcare spending should drive state procurement of pharmaceuticals as more Chileans are covered, at the same time, the already strained healthcare system may end up driving more middle class patients into the private insurance funded
