To penetrate emerging African markets, China's Sichuan provincial government is to build a pharmaceutical production facility in Nigeria's south-western state of Osun. A memorandum of understanding has been signed and construction of the US$50mn plant is expected to be completed in June 2007. It is BMI view that China's investment is motivated by a desire to gain early foothold in one of Africa's most populous countries where returns could be extraordinary if Nigeria's economy develops only marginally.
