An agreement between the US drug major Abbott Laboratories and Brazilian firm Medley illustrates one strategy for patent holders facing expirations in the country. The deal relates to Abbott's appetite suppressant sibutramine, branded by the US firm as Reductil and Plenty but launched as a generic by Medley in mid-2005, ahead of the drug's patent expiration in December.
