Calls to introduce a mandatory medical insurance scheme in Hong Kong have grown in volume in recent months amid fears that the publicly funded system is unable to cope with current levels of demand. The Hospital Authority has been running a deficit for several years, and an ageing population should ensure that there is no immediate let up in the pressure.
