Venezuelan authorities have launched a crackdown on pharmacies illicitly dispensing prescription antibiotics. The move has been linked to growing resistance to antibiotics, following a survey last year. A new regulation - published in January 2006 - increased penalties against over-the-counter sales of antibiotics, introducing the threat of fines and closure.
