Thailand's low-cost health system is facing strong criticism as hospitals face soaring debts and medical practitioners increasingly desert the sector. Under the scheme, which was introduced in 2001, even uninsured patients may visit any government hospital and pay only THB30 (US$0.78) per visit, with the remaining cost of the treatment borne by the state.
