The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Iran is thought to be greater than previously stated due to a sharp increase in the number of intravenous drug users. According to the country's deputy health minister, there are about 40,000 cases of HIV/AIDS among drug addicts, with industry sources warning that the figure could rise to 100,000 by 2008. It is estimated that 62.3% of those infected with HIV/AIDS contracted the disease through intravenous drug use. With around 3.5mn drug users in the country, medical experts fear that the country is facing an explosion in HIV/AIDS cases.
