Bahrain is considering introducing a compulsory healthcare scheme in which employers will be responsible for providing health insurance for expatriate workers. The scheme will see the full financial burden for expatriate healthcare shifted to the private sector by 2012. Industry sources indicate that the overall the cost of implementing this scheme will not exceed 0.5% of the overall labour cost of the economy. The policy is currently in the draft phase, and if implemented, will be introduced in two phases lasting two years and five years respectively.
