Local Manufacturing In Need Of Investment

The Algerian pharmaceutical sector is in dire need of investment in order to counter the pharmaceutical trade deficit, which UN Comtrade put at -US$1.73bn in 2009? and which we expect will increase to -US$1.76bn by 2014. Medicine exports are meagre, at US$5.1mn in 2009, according to UN Comtrade. Although the government favours generics in its import policy, in order to lower costs, it has yet to make any major moves to boost the local drugmaking sector, which is largely generic based.
