BMI View: We believe collaborations between pharmaceutical companies, contract research organisations (CROs), academia, non-profit organisations and governments will become increasingly important in accelerating research and development (R&D) - with the primary benefit of such partnerships being the spreading of risks associated with drug discovery. However, BMI also notes that this risk-sharing approach may make any parent company a less attractive acquisition target, as a proportion of its products will be committed to the pipeline of other drugmakers.
