Healthcare Expenditure To Rise As 2011 Budget Passes Parliament

BMI View: Budget increases to Bulgaria's predominantly publicly-funded healthcare system are welcome news for the country's pharmaceutical industry. However, BMI reiterates that a high level of accumulated healthcare and hospital debt will have to be cleared, prolonging funding shortages into 2011. While 2010 public healthcare cuts were minimal in absolute terms, spending allocated to healthcare services and hospitals reduced by 15% and 23%, respectively. The reductions limited hospital pharmaceutical purchases and extended hospital deficits, which were already historically high.
