Novartis' Gilenya Approved

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Swiss company Novartis' oral multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment Gilenya (fingolimod), a first-line treatment for relapsing forms of MS - the most common forms of the disease. The FDA's approval makes Gilenya the first oral treatment indicated for relapsing forms of MS available in the US, beating Merck KGaA to the launch of its oral MS drug, Cladribine, in the world's largest drug market. Novartis' drug has been approved in Russia and is awaiting approval in other markets, while Merck KGaA has launched Cladribine in Australia and Russia and is expecting regulatory
