Drugmakers Lose Price Fixing Appeal

As a result of the investigations launched in February 2010, the Mexican Federal Competition Commission (CFC) decided to fine six pharmaceutical companies - Eli Lilly, Probiomed, Laboratorios Cropharma, Laboratorios Pisa, Fresenius Kabi México and Baxter - more than US$11.6mn for conspiring to artificially raise the price of insulin. According to the CFC, the companies engaged in monopolistic practices during public bidding processes between 2003 and 2006 in an attempt to gain procurement contracts in the public health sector IMSS (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social).
