Controversial Pricing Changes Suspended By Government

In late 2009, BMI analysed the drug pricing amendment put forward by the Egyptian government. The implications for the local and multinational drugmakers in the country were far-reaching and we cautioned that the policy was likely to undergo further revisions as a result of the joint opposition from the pharmaceutical sector. This has indeed happened, although earlier than expected, given the lengthy time periods the Egyptian government usually takes to enact or revise legislation. Our short-term political risk rating for Egypt is six out of 10, which reflects this unfavourable trait.
