Biosimilar Approvals Slowing Despite Vast Market Potential

Relatively limited competition compared with the traditional small molecule generics sector, the ability to offer large absolute price reductions against originator firms and the retention of strong margins are key positives for the industry. However, it appears that relatively few companies are able to capitalise on such opportunities. Data from the European Medicines Association (EMA) shows just one application was made through the centralised marketing authorisation process for a biosimilar product in 2009.
