Taxing Other Sectors To Raise Funds For Ministry Of Health
April 2010 | Industry Trend AnalysisEgypt's government-owned Medical Insurance Authority is trying to reduce its massive budget deficit of US$31.2mn by increasing the price of subscriptions from EGP4 (US$0.73) to EGP8 (US$1.46) per person. For low-income families living on less than EGP15 (US$2.75) per day, this is beyond affordable. Since real wages are not expected to rise in the short term, we believe the government could be creating an inverse situation whereby those on low income or unemployed are unable to access healthcare.
