Pharmacists Required To Offer Cheapest Generic Alternatives

BMI believes that the use of generic drugs in Estonia is set to increase, following the introduction of a decree aimed at promoting the substitution of generics for prescription drugs. Building on current requirements for doctors to prescribe medicines by their international non-proprietary name (INN) rather than a brand name, the new directive means that pharmacists have to offer patients the cheapest available version of the medicine being prescribed. The move mirrors similar legislation introduced in Lithuania and reflects the need for immediate public sector cost savings in line with a broader fiscal austerity
