US Pharmaceutical Industry Faces Trade & IP Troubles

US pharmaceutical companies with sales exposure in Brazil could potentially face substantial declines in revenues over the medium term. In retaliation against massive subsidies that are paid to US cotton farmers, which Brazil - among other countries - says is undermining its attempts to trade in a competitive market, the World Trade Organization (WTO) allowed Brazil to make sanctions worth up to US$830mn against the US, including up to US$560mn on goods and US$270mn on intellectual property rights and services. The Brazilian government will publish a list of retaliatory measures on March 1 2010, with pharmaceutical products among the candidates
