EAC To Group Purchase Medicines In Long Run
February 2010 | Industry Trend AnalysisThe East African Community (EAC) has been discussing the prospect of regional pooled procurement of medicines for essential drugs since 2007. Pooling procurement is increasingly becoming an efficient strategy to remove restrictions on healthcare accessibility, including high prices. We caution that despite the upsides to joint purchases of medicines, local manufacturing in the EAC must be optimised to cope with local and regional demand, thereby reaching economies of scale and eventually much lower prices.
