Public Healthcare Sector In Debt

High levels of Portuguese government debt have filtered through to the healthcare sector, with public hospitals owing the pharmaceutical industry around EUR625mn (US$856mn) in 2009. According to local publication P├║blico, the Portuguese pharmaceutical industry association, Apifarma, claims that the average payments were about 285 days late and that half of the accumulated debt was more than 90 days late. However, the Ministry of Health said that the average payments were around 111 days late, stating that this was down from the previous year.
