Novartis To Pay US$185mn Fine For Off-Label Marketing

Multinational drugmaker Novartis is to pay a US$185mn fine in order to settle criminal allegations relating to off-label promotion of the epilepsy drug Trileptal (oxcarbazepine), as well as certain payments made to healthcare providers in connection with the medicine. The US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania (EDPA) has been investigating Novartis since 2005 and the drug company has, after four years, pleaded guilty to the misdemeanour violation of the US Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
