Department of Health Launches Consultation On Generic Medicine Substitution
January 2010 | Industry Trend AnalysisThe UK's Department of Health (DoH) has launched a formal consultation regarding a 2009 Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme (PPRS) plan aimed at introducing generic medicine substitution in primary care. The move, posited for implementation in January 2010, would enable pharmacists and other dispensers to fill a prescription for a branded drug by dispensing an equivalent generic medicine. The PPRS stated that if the plan were launched, prescribers could opt out of substitution where it is clinically appropriate for the patient to receive a specific branded medicine. Additionally, provisions would be made to prohibit the substitution of certain categories of medicines
