The WHO Awards Prequalification For Global Use Of GlaxoSmithKline's Pneumococcal Vaccine

The World Health Organization (WHO) has awarded prequalification for global use to Synflorix, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)'s pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. Pneumococcal disease describes infections caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumonia and includes lung and blood infections such as septicemia, meningitis and pneumonia, as well as ear infections such as otis media. Pneumococcal infections cause more than 1mn deaths annually, with serious or life-threatening infections generally seen in children or elderly patients, as well as those who are not immunised. Immunisation is generally given to young children aged between 2 months and 5 years.
