BMI calculates the Spanish over-the-counter (OTC) medicines market to have reached a value of EUR2.0bn (US$2.9bn) in 2008. By 2013 we expect this figure to reach EUR2.5bn (US$3.2bn), equating to a constant annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.64% in local currency terms and 2.14% in US dollar terms. OTC medicines accounted for 13.2% of the total Spanish drug market in 2008 and by 2013 it is expected that the non-prescription medicines market share will increase marginally to 13.4%. Comparing Spain's OTC medicines market share to other Western European countries in 2008, such as Belgium (15.8%), the UK (17.3%), France (17.6%)
