Further Price Pressures Placed On Prescription Drug Market

The UK's Department of Health is to reduce the category M tariff by an average of 9.4p per item, as a result of a government survey revealing that contractors had achieved 'significant excess' profit beyond the agreed GBP500mn (US$738mn) in 2008-2009. The changes, which affect generic drugs, will come into effect in October 2009 and it is estimated that the government will make savings of approximately GBP20-25mn (US$29-37mn) over Q409.
