Manufacturing pharmaceuticals in high-cost, developed countries is becoming anachronistic. This is because medicines can generally be made to the same standard in emerging markets for much less money. The exceptions are complex agents and specialty products, which both cost approximately the same to produce wherever the factory is located. BMI looks at a recent example of this outsourcing trend.
