'Me-too' drugs are seen by some as a prime example of all that is wrong with the pharmaceutical industry. They are only marginally different to known medicines, but still receive a patent and are therefore able to command premium prices, which are instinctively paid by governments, health insurance companies and patients. Because these stakeholders are already buckling under high healthcare costs, critics say that slightly-modified drugs prevent uptake of other healthcare interventions and are a 'squandering of fortunes'.[1]
