Cervical Cancer Vaccination For US$43,600 Per QALY

In a study that BMI expects to be pivotal for the informed inclusion of cervical cancer vaccination in public immunisation schemes, the August 21 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) carries an assessment of the cost-effectiveness of Merck & Co's Gardasil vaccine in the US. The researchers estimate that the cost of vaccinating 12-year-old girls to be US$43,600 per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained. Running catch-up programmes for older girls would cost considerably more per QALY gained, reaching US$152,700 per QALY for catch-up coverage up to 26 years
