Santhera Launches Catena For Friedreich's Ataxia

October 2008 | Product Launch

Swiss speciality pharmaceutical company Santhera Pharmaceuticals has launched Catena (idebenone) in Canada for the treatment of Friedreich's ataxia, a rare congenital disease characterised by muscle and nerve degeneration. Sales are expected to be modest because of the small patient population. However, very little needs to be spent on sales and marketing because there are no competing products and patient groups are fully aware of the product. BMI applauds Santhera's strategy of targeting this previously untreatable condition and looks forward to the commercialisation of subsequent compounds in its pipeline, which also address completely unmet medical needs.
