November 2008 | Industry NewsThe online pharmacy sector in Germany has expanded rapidly since 2004, when the sale of drugs over the internet was first legalised. Of the estimated 22,000 pharmacies in Germany, approximately 10% have requested an online pharmacy license. Furthermore internet searches reveal approximately 500 e-pharmacies selling drugs in Germany, with a large proportion located on eBay. Online sales account for 1-2% of prescription and 5-6% of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines. However, despite the rapid expansion of the online business, difficulties in regulating the sector and concerns over counterfeit drugs means that using bonafide sources for purchasing medicines remains a key priority.
