Private Hospital Construction Widespread
September 2008 | Industry NewsThe Bulgarian government's continued delays in privatising state-owned hospitals is causing a surge in the construction of greenfield facilities, as investors look to capitalise on the forthcoming privatisation of the national health insurance fund (NHIF) and patients' increasing desire and ability to pay for more expensive private medical treatment. Since the turn of the century the number of private healthcare facilities has expanded rapidly, from only 18 - with a total of 306 beds - in 2000. By the end of 2007 there were 71 new private facilities in the country offering beds to 3,110 patients. A further 80 facilities
